Rockwool/Roxul

What is Rockwool/Roxul Insulation

Rockwool/Roxul insulation is a type of mineral wool insulation made from natural volcanic rock like basalt. It is valued for its high thermal resistance, soundproofing capabilities, and excellent fire resistance. The manufacturing process involves melting rock and spinning it into fine fibers that are then bound into batts, boards, or loose fill.

Rockwool can withstand temperatures over up to 2150°F (1177°C)  and does not burn, making it a highly effective fire barrier.

It provides excellent thermal performance, which can lower energy bills by reducing heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Its R-value is generally higher than fiberglass insulation per inch.

The dense, non-directional fiber structure is highly effective at absorbing and blocking airborne noise, making it ideal for soundproofing.

The material is water-repellent and “breathable,” meaning it won’t absorb water and can dry out if it gets wet, returning to its original insulation value.

Its rigid composition prevents it from sagging or slumping in cavities over time, ensuring a continuous thermal and acoustic barrier.

Common Applications
  • Cavity walls: Used between studs in exterior walls for thermal and acoustic insulation.
  • Soundproofing: Often used in interior walls for rooms like home theaters or recording studios.
  • Fire protection: Used in fire-rated joints, penetrations, and perimeter fire containment systems.
  • Continuous insulation: Rigid boards are used for continuous exterior insulation, under slabs, and on foundation walls.
